Microsoft has finally rolled out Windows Vista. What was announced as a revolutionary new way of computing has turned out to be an incremental upgrade from XP built on the Windows Server 2003 stack. The main selling point seems to be security, however, it is how Microsoft defines it and what other’s call nannying and mistrusting the user: Persistent nag screens brought to by User Account Control and a lockdown of many system resources, which will give system admins nightmares and hamper enterprise adoption. Besides that, Microsoft has “improved” piracy controls to a point where it keeps continously annoying users and even locks down the entire system save for the browser in certain situations. This O/S together with Office 2007 might be the last major upgrade incentive from Microsoft, and if it keeps annoying users with bloated resource hogs it might not even be that.
